How to grow onions in containers.
How to grow onions in containers for a early spring crop.
Few vegetables are of greater important than the onion. Onions are a hardy biennial which is native to western Asia. The botanial name is allium Cepa:which it belongs to the Lily family, Liliaceae. What are onion sets? They are raised from seeds sown in the summer of the previous year;under good cultivation they will yield fair sized bulbs by the end of the season. Growing onion sets are very simple to do and very easily. First of all what you need to do is go to you favorite garden center that sells onion sets which comes in yellow, red or white. Now when you get them home you need to get some clean plastic containers and a bag of potting soil. I usually use containers that are called six packs which haves six
separate compartments that you fill with the potting soil and after you do this. You can take a onion set and stick it
into the soil. you need to cover the onion set completely with the soil. Now after you plant all 8 containers in the flat you are ready to mist the flat with water. If you don't want to do a full flat of onions you can plant one container and grow the onions the same way. You don't need to have a full flat of onions you can grow as many onions that you wish. Soak the flat but don't drown the onion sets just keep them evenly moist. And if you have a greenhouse you can place the flat on the greenhouse bench if not. You can place them in your house under a grow light. It will take about one month for the onions to grow and be ready to eat as green onions. Or you can either plant them outside or transplant into a larger container and let the onions bulbs get larger. How to make your onion bulbs larger is to do this when the plants get 6 to 8 inches tall you can trim each plant back to half their size to 4 to 3 inches.
You can do this twice doing the growing season to maker bigger bulbs. Also don't let your onions go to seed which I mean bloom. What you want is to cut the tops off twice a growing season to make bigger bulbs. This is for onions that you would like to have larger for in the fall when you would pull them for storage. Which you would use in the winter months. Now if you want to have a continues flow of green onions doing the growing season you can plant a few of them every two weeks. Growing onions and other vegetables in containers can be very rewarding because you have a fresh supply of produce during the growing season. Also people that live in the inner city and don't have room to plant a regular garden can plant in containers and have great success with doing what I told them to do in the above article. I hope you try this and let me know how you do.

How to grow Large Leaf Sweet Basil from seed.
How to grow Large Leaf Sweet Basil from seed.
Large Leaf Sweet Basil
Hi Gardening Friends
Well if you want to grow Basil from seed? Here is how you can do this from seed. First of all as always you need to have sterilized flats and germinating soil less mixture. Take your sterilized flat that you prepare with the germination mix. Make sure you fill the flat half full of the mixture.
After you do that then you soak the flat with water and let drain overnight until the next day.
The next day get your Basil seed packet and sow your seeds evenly.
Don't cover your Basil seed let them uncovered in the flat. If you want a more even seed germination you can cover your seed flat with saran wrap to make the seeds germinate faster. It takes about 7 to 14 days to germinate after you sow the seed remember to mist the entire flat of seeds. Never let your seed flat dry out. The most popular Basil to grow from seed is Large Leaf Italian Basil,Ocimun Basilicum. This Basil is great for pesto and other Italian food dishes. These plants reach 8 to 24 inches tall, 6 to 18 inches wide.
Here are some more Basil's that you can grow from seed that I have try and liked. Find these varieties to be very easy to grow from seed besides the Large Leaf Italian Basil.
a.Genovese 68 days from seed.
Classic Italian variety. Authentic flavor and appearance.Tall and relatively slow to bolt with large dark green leaves about 3 inches long. Ht. 24-30 inches
b.Aroma 2 70 days from seed.
Disease-resistant Genovese type
This variety is good for commercial growers in greenhouse and field production. Also good variety for the home gardener.
Classic basil appearance, with glossy dark green 3 inch long leaves and classic basil aroma. Ht. 20-24 inches
c. Nufar 77 days from seed.
Disease resistance Italian large leaf type.
This is a great variety of basil for the commercial grower and the home owner. For the commercial grower you can
grow Nufar in the field, greenhouse and hydroponic production. For the home owner this is a great variety to grow in the home garden because of its resistance to disease. Ht. 24-30 inches.
Citrus favor type basil
a. Mrs Burns Lemon 60 days from seed. O.basilicum citriodora
This basil is very unique in that it is sweet, tangy and lemon scented basil.
The leaves are very bright in the color of green.
21/2 inch long leaves with white flowering blooms
which makes this basil plant both attractive and intensely flavorful. Ht. 20-24 inches
Fine Leaf
What are fine leaf basil?
Use fine leaf or Greek basil the same way you use regular basil-in pesto, soup, stuffing,or any vegetable dish, especially
in beans, peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes. Greek basil has the advantage over normal basil of having smaller leaves and other stems. Its flavors is also quite strong.
a.Spicy bush 70 Days from seed. O basilicum minimum
Spicy bush is a small, dome-shaped plants with tiny leaves.
Spicy, sweet basil favor packed into 1 inch long leaves.
Plants can be grown in pots or garden beds. Ht. 8-14 inches.
Purple leaf basil
a. Purple Ruffles. 85 days from seed.
This purple basil is a all American award winner AAS winner.
Its large leaves are greatly used for garnishing.

The only purple Genovese-type basil.
Large 2-3 inch thick,turned-down leaves.

They are the only company that I found that they carry a large selection of organic vegetable seeds.
Johnny's Selected Seeds Company was founded in January 1973 by Rob Johnston Jr. 2013 marks two milestones for Johnny's Selected Seeds. During the last few months,Johnny's employees completed the transition to 100% ownership,a quest that began six years ago.Johnny's other big milestone that they celebrate is their 40th anniversary in business.
This company sells both retail and wholesale that is great news for the homeowner and the commercial

Examples: Lettuce,Leaf Green Waldmann's Dark Green Lattony, and Red Leaf varities are Red Sails,Refugio these just a few kinds of lettuce seed that you can buy from Johnny's which is organic. You don't need a catalog to order from you can place a order online at Johnnyseeds.com which they have a online catalog. They also have a toll free telephone number to place your order or to ask information on how to grow your seeds that you purchase from them. i really like the free growing information the catalog and website offers you so you know what to do with the seeds you buy from Johnny,s. Growing Vegetables from seed to harvest
Hi Gardening Friends
In this gardening article I am going to talk about how to grow vegetable transplants from seed.
Well I hope everyone received all of their seed catalogs from their favorite seed companies.
So I hope you order your vegetable seeds by now or in the process of doing so.
This is the first of many gardening articles on how to grow your own vegetable transplants for the up
and coming spring gardening 2013 growing season. Thoughout the year of 2013 I will be writing gardening
articles on growing vegetables transplants and planting them outside in the garden or growing them in containers.
So you will have to come back to my gardening blog to see what is happening the entire growing season spring-summer and fall. So here is what you can be doing now to have early crops of vegetables for this spring season.
What you can plant now inside or in a greenhouse. Lettuce, all of the cole crops like Early Cabbage,Broccoli,
Cauliflower,Brussel Sprouts,Kale and any other cold weather crops,Early Tomatoes,Early Peppers,Spinach,Beets
and Carrots. Yes you can grow Beets and Carrots in the greenhouse or inside your house for an early crop of
both. Here are step by step instructions on how to sow the above vegetables seeds.
What you need to get started are germination mix or seed starting mixture. I have a picture of germination
mix that I use in my greenhouse operation. The next step if you don't have new or clean plastic trays or flats is to wash your flats in clorox water. Which is 1 part clorox to 3 parts water. Here is picture of clean flats.
Next step is to fill the flat half full of the germination mixture. Now that you got your seed flat ready to
sow your seeds. Get your seed packet that you would like to sow your seeds in the flat. What I use alot is
to sow seeds is a seedmater tool. Picture of seed master tool. Your can get them in mail order seed catalogs.
You open the packet of seeds and be careful when doing this and pour them into the seedmaster tool. And start
sowing them over the flat the seed master tool spreads the seed more evenly then by doing it by hand.
So here I will tell you which of the above seeds to cover lightly with soil and which ones not to cover.
Do not cover Lettuce,Spinach,Beets and Carrots. Now the ones to cover lightly with soil the entire cole crops,Early Cabbage,Broccoli,Cauliflower,Brussel Sprouts,Kale, Peppers and Tomatoes. Then go and mark you seed flat with the name of your seeds with a white plastic tag in the side of the flat. Now you can mist your flat with water soak the entire flat with water. But don't drown the flat. Now you can place the flat on the bench in the greenhouse or under artifical light in your house make sure that in the house that you put the flat on a propagation mat or supply some bottom heat.
Most of the above seeds will germination in 10 to 14 days so keep the flat or flats evenly moist until after germination. Then cut back on the water. Well I hope this article on how to prepare and sowing seeds help the people that is willing to start their own vegetable plants from seed. Let me know how you are doing with this information. Come back for more information on gardeing and growing plants.

Hi Gardening Friends! Article on Gardener's Supply Company
Hi Gardening Friends
I was going through my mail today and I found that I received a catalog from Gardener's Supply Company.
I really enjoy this catalog because they carry all kind of innovative products that are hard to find.
Like self watering containers for vegetables and flowers. I brought some of these a few years ago and
I was impress how they worked. They were great when the weather got hot the plants in the container
didn't dry out like in the old days.
Here how it works. Each of the Terrazza PLANTERS includes a generous self watering reservior that keeps
your plants hydrated. The fill tube has a cover to prevent clogging.Level indicator tells you when to add
water. wicking fabric transports water from the reservoir to thristy roots. Evaporation grill"breathes"
extra moisture and oxygen into the soil. Caster are optional for the planters. So this is one item that
I really like and this company carries and it works. Gardener's Supply Company haves many more unique
gardening items in their catalog. They also have a website which is gardeners.com and a toll free number
which you can use to call to place a order. 1-888-845-0677.
I really like this company becauce of all the innovative products that they carry which you don't find
any place else. I really like the self watering containers. I give this company a thumbs up.
If you don't have a catalog call the 800 number and ask them to send you one. Or go on line to see
what they have on their website. Email me and let me know what you think of this company.
Well until next time happy gardening!
